Amnesty International and the Miami Hip Hop Community to Hold Concert Calling on Obama to end Torture and Shut Down Guantanamo.
( Miami , FL )—In the name of fighting terrorism, the US government has subjected people who have not been charged with or convicted of any crime to torture and other cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment. Local hip hop artists will be advocating for President-Elect Obama to honor his commitment to shut-down Guantanamo Bay and end the use of torture in his first 100 days of office. Hip Hop for Human Rights will take place at PS14 Nightclub on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 9:00pm.
"If it were up to me I would close Guantanamo not tomorrow but this afternoon . . . Essentially, we have shaken the belief that the world had in America's justice system . .. . and it's causing us far more damage than any good we get from it." said Colin Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State in an interview.
The concert will bring together members of the local hip –hop community and music lovers to enjoy a night of performances and advocate for the US to end the use of torture. Local hip- hop and jazz sensations ArtOfficial and Mayday will accompany popular hip hop artists like LaGuardia, Brimstone 127 and the Brass King, LMS and several DJs. The concert will also showcase breakdancing by the Heartbreakerz Crew and artists by Arte Del Barrio.
For six years, the central symbol of U.S. abuse in the "war on terror" has been the US controlled detention center in Guantanamo Bay , Cuba . "I believe that each element of hip-hop has its own artistic voice and in Miami there is a rising movement to use those elements to speak against and take action on human rights issues such the grave incidences occurring in Guantanamo Bay." says Leah Cross, Amnesty International Local Group Co-coordinator and Hip Hop for Human Rights lead organizer.
