Buffalo Brown

Local musical jack-of-all-trades Buffalo Brown is a busy guy.  As a musician who wears a number of hats, Brown started out playing the clarinet and the piano, graduated to drums, and at 16 years old picked up an old spanish acoustic guitar that his sister had laying around.  With a long list of collaborators, Brown is one to watch in Miami.

Until about 4 years ago music had mostly been a hobby for Buffalo; now it is his chosen profession. He is due to release two solo albums this year. One is an instrumental, ambient affair, while the second is Mr. Brown's own version of pop music, sort of a "rootsy electronica."

These days  Buffalo is working  with Elastic Bond, Fitzroy,  Angela Laino,  Mawon, Out of the Anonymous, and singer/songwriter Deblois.

You can catch him playing with Elastic Bond every Friday night at the Loews Hotel on Miami Beach and at various other spots around the city.

The following is an excerpt from a conversation I had with Buffalo at the monthly Collision party, which he hosts with Notorious Nastie.

Liz: Buffalo, what projects are you currently involved in?

Buffalo: Everyday is a little bit different, I can’t really tell you there’s anything more immediate than me as an individual artist growing and cultivating who I am. There are albums being recorded that we’re going to be promoting later.

L: What instruments do you play?

BB: I play a few different instruments, I’m mostly a guitar player, I’ve spent a lot of time with that instrument. But I love drum, bass, keyboard, guitar, of course guitar… uh, I’m missing something.

L: Dums, bass, guitar… sing? You’ve been singing?

BB: Yeah, I’ve been doing a little singing.

L: Ok, so that leads me to you, doing a solo project, is there anything you can tell me…?

BB: Yeah, things that I’m developing are basically putting together and synthesizing everything that I have been expressing between the different bands that I play with. And just making it all mean…my solo work is an expression of me.

L: Where can we see you play?

BB: Very, very important, there  is a very cool show going on at Sweat Records, January 17.

L: Do you have a favorite town that you like to play? Favorite venue? Place?

BB: Favoite town to play in…? Let me think about this… um, Chicago.

L: Chicago?

BB: [Laughter]

L: Obama’s home town. Ok, three artists that you’re listening to right now.

BB: Three artists I’m listening to right now? John Lennon, let me answer… in particular Plastic Ono Band, and  another one would be Richard Shepard, he’s a Miami artist back in the 90’s, late, late 90’s, early 2000’s, been reflecting on some of that. And the third thing I’ve been listening to is David Bowie.

L: Who inspires you?

BB: Think of John Lennon.

L: When you aren’t playing music, what do you do?

BB: Uh, I don’t know.......

(We both begin to laugh as the DJ has just set up and John Lennon begins to play in the background)

L: How did you do that? You’re the magic man.

BB: [Laughing] When I’m not playing music I like watching movies and comedies. Not just specifically comedies but all kinds of movies, and by comedies I mean more of Comedy shows.

L: What’s your favorite comedy show?

BB: Tight lead between It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Family Guy.

L: Give me one word to describe yourself.

BB: One word to describe myself… wow....let me see...

[Long pause]

Glowing.

And you know what?  He was.
