REV Miami's Launch Party: Ultra Violent Magazine
From Ultra Violent Magazine's website, www.uvmagazine.com:
What is Ultra Violent Magazine?
Ultra Violent is your biannual horror and exploitation cinema guide, focusing on genre films from around the world. We cover everything from international horror to American cult flicks to forgotten schlock and underground oddities. Each issue is chock full of exclusive interviews, articles, reviews, and more. Ultra Violent began in 1999, after first publishing five issues of its predecessor, a cut and paste locally distributed zine called Unsane. Our intended schedule with Ultra Violent is to come out every April and October. For those of you who have kept track of our schedule, it’s been incredibly irregular since the beginning. We’re doing what we can to get on track and get it out on time. Even if it’s not back by the scheduled release date, we’ll keep you posted, and have it out as soon as possible. We’ve always felt it’s better to take extra time and release a quality product, as opposed to rushing to beat deadlines and producing something inferior.
I first met Scott Gabbey (publisher and writer of Ultra Violent) in 2003, when I was living in Orlando. We used to work together in a data entry center in a broken down strip mall in one of the nastier areas of the city. At first, Scott and I would hang out together and try to relieve the doldrums of the day by exchanging music and cracking jokes.
At some point Scott told me that he published a horror and exploitation cinema magazine. We would talk about the work that he was doing, the things he covered, horror movies, the process he went through for the magazine, but more than anything about wanting Winnie to give us blumpies (that joke that will never ever get old).
Scott is the sole motivating factor that got me started doing magazines. I figured, 'if this dorky white guy can do it, then I definitely can.'
I had to invite Scott to set up a table at the Launch Party. Not only because I want people exposed to his magazine and sub-culture of Horror & Exploitation Cinema but also so we can hang out again - it's been almost 5 years!
Scott is one of the nicest and hardest working people I've ever known. He may resemble an alien, but trust me, he's a good guy. When I told him that I wanted to write magazines as well, he was incredibly supportive and cool about it.
Thanks Scott.
Check out his Magazine online at www.uvmagazine.com, or go by his table at the show. Don't forget to ask him about his Coffin Joe stories.
REV Miami's Launch Party (see sidebar) will be happening this Friday, January 30, 2009, at PS14 (28 NE 14th Street DWNTWN), doors open at 10, music starts at 10:30.
