Concluding our series of posts for the participants in REVMiami's Launch Party is an outline of all the artists involved in the show.  We specifically chose a diverse sampling of Miami artists; from a formally trained oil painter to an irreverent pair of graffiti inspired hooligans, to give a decent representation as to what this city has to offer the art world (even though there is sooooo much more).

Each of these artists is unique in their own way and has something different and special that contributes to Miami art and the growing scene. We felt it was important to represent what is happening locally - right now.

REVMiami IS dedicated to the coverage of all forms of art within Miami.  The artists, musicians, and filmmakers were all chosen to represent the mish-mash of Miami culture, and the promise and ascension of our colorful, odd and exciting town.

To combine them all into a single event was our grand vision, which reflects the philosophy of REVMiami.com itself.  Please take in the sights and sounds of Miami's underground culture.  Eventually these artists will be household names and at some point in the future you can say, "I saw them all together one night."

BOPSY,INC.

BOPSY, INC. is the collaboration of two local outlaw artists, AHOLSNIFFSGLUE.. and Andrew. AHOLSNIFFSGLUE... gained notoriety around Miami for his outrageous and bold art.  Look on almost any street sign, bathroom, bar, hotel, or abuelita's handbag and you'll find one of his instantly recognizable stickers.  While visiting Tallahassee I saw scrolled on the back wall of The Irish Pub that infamous "AHOLSNIFFSGLUE..."  Apparently he's been everywhere and his tag proves it.

Also, Andrew has become somewhat of a protege to AHOL.  They are part of the braintrust that helped create (((SHAKE))) Thursdays at The Vagabond located right next to PS14, an old school hip-hop themed party, and their art is becoming somewhat of a monstrosity.  When these two get together, art takes on a new style that has "nothing to do with anything."

AHOLSNIFFSGLUE...'s artwork is always on display on his website, www.aholsniffsglue.com.

YVONNE CORDOBA

yvonne1From Yvonne Cordoba's Myspace biography:

Born in New York City, Yvonne Cordoba has called Miami home for many years. She graduated from G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School. and afterwards attended the Visual Arts Conservatory program at MDCC. While there, Cordoba won a mural contest which later was erected at the Liberty City Entrepreneurial Center. Upon completing Miami Dade, Cordoba transferred to the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). It was at MICA that Cordoba was able to hone her skills at oil painting, detailing figures and capturing moments in time.

I got an email one day from Christina DerHagopian (who will be showing her film "Me As He" during REVMiami's Launch Party as well) and she told me to check out Yvonne's artwork and if it was possible to get her in the Party to display her art.

yvonne2When I went to Yvonne's Myspace page I was completely blown away.  Her character and figure drawing is unbelievable.  The people are so full of action and life, they literally come off the canvas.  Not only that, but her work tells stories - a rare skill indicative of the incredible talent she posses.  Her paintings, which at times are classicalically styled, are breathtaking.  The fact that an artist of this caliber is taking part in this show amazes me.

For any art collector that is planning to attend, this IS artwork that you want to invest in.  Mark my words, Yvonne's work will be featured someday soon in museums and high-end galleries.

D.BAUCHERY

dbauchery1One day my friend Dianna Perez (aka D. Bauchery) told me that she was going back to school.  When I asked her what she was going to study, she told me fine arts.

Dianna has been interested in art just about as long as she can remember but never really pursued it.  Inevitably as she hit her quarter-life crisis she asked herself, "what do I really want to do with my life?"  Far be it for Dianna not to grab life by the balls and go after exactly what she wants - it's just the way she is.

Even though she's only been working on her art a shirt time, she has already been featured in several galleries and art exhibitions including Running With Scissors 1, 2, and 3, Metamorphosis, and the Colt 45 Exhibition.  The slightly morbid depictions and horror themed oil paintings are fascinating.

dbacuhery2Apparently, she's doing something totally outside of the realm of her typical pieces for the Launch Party, using mixed media instead of just oil.  She told me that she hates it when artists bring the same pieces to show after show and loves keeping it fresh.

I also love the fact that Dianna is excited about the up and coming art scene and feels that "we are in the beginning process of building what will be."

JOEY EXPLODEY

mexicans

A Miami  native, wild man Joey Explodey will feature several of his unique paintings at the show. Inspired by "cartoon logic" and Robert Williams, Explodey has a distinct visual style.

This guy got his start drawing comic books. Now we can find his work on  canvas, walls, tits and all sorts of other things. Some of his best work has been done on cocktail napkins.

Also know as Mr. Explodey, Joey can be found setting things on fire and has a knack for getting kicked out of restaurants, clubs, and dive bars.

JONESY

jonesy2

This is Chawna "JONESY" Jones' first exhibition!  I couldn't be more thrilled about that.  Just like with musician Gus Gus, REVMiami hopes to be a forum for newbie artists and long standing experienced artists alike.

I didn't know anything about her until AHOLSNIFFSGLUE... asked us if she could be included in the show and we were ecstatic about it.

JONESYis a local product born and raised in Miami, FL. She  started out at the magnet arts program at Southwood middle school, and is now a student at FIU, pursuing a degree in psychology.

Her zombie horror cinema inspired artwork is unique, creative, and weird. Considering that she is like a newborn baby crawling around trying to find her legs to stand on, I would consider what she's done already a major accomplishment.

Beyond that, being able to follow an artists progression, evolution, and development is exciting, and I hope that JONESY knows she will always have a place to showcase her artwork with REVMiami.

  1. A great collection of creative contemporary artists here. I am jealous to be many miles from Miami and cannot meet these great young artists myself. However, the beauty of the internet means i can atleast appreciate their work from afar (Shanghai!). I wish them the best success in Miami, and across the States.
