DWNTWN Concert Series

DWNTWN Concert SeriesBayfront Park, Tina Hills Pavillion (301 N Biscayne Blvd)
Time: 5:30pm - 8pm
Cost: FREE

Featuring: Chana and Afrobeta

The public is invited to attend the February installment of the Downtown Concert Series presented by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and produced by the Rhythm Foundation. The concert will feature LA-based singer Chana.

Chana makes fun dance music that is also interesting and captivating, influenced as much by Stereolab and Gorillaz as Aterciopelados and Julieta Venegas. Her first batch of demos includes No Me Mandes Flores, which got significant exposure on Latin radio and television.

About Afrobeta (from REVMiami.com's Launch Party: The Bands):

Afrobeta so completely encapsulates so many different aspects of Miami music it’s stunning.  Tony Smurfio’s synthetic deliciousness underpins the ambient vocals of the gorgeous Cuci Amador.  Their music is seductive, sexy, teasing, and beautiful - just like the vast majority of women in Miami (the most beautiful in the world).  Cuci’s singing reminds me a lot of AIR collaborator Beth Hirsch or Esthero, which fits so perfectly in the lounges and bars found in any trendy hotspot in South Beach or Downtown’s developing Upper East Side.  But they wouldn’t be from Miami if Tony didn’t lay down a fast, catchy, and danceable beat.

¡MAYDAY! Jazid Night

Time: Midnight
Cost: $10

This Friday will be a special event - it's Bernie's Birthday!!

From Jazid.net: ¡MAYDAY! ¡MAYDAY! ¡MAYDAY! believe the hype, with a murderous live show and recent gems featuring Cee-lo Green (#1 charting Gnarls Barkley), Devin the Dude, Killa Kela (Europe's #1 beat boxer) and DJ Craze (6x World Battle Champion) it's easy to see why ¡MAYDAY! is fast moving into the popular consciousness. They've shared the stage with The Roots, Method Man, Red Man, Mos Def, MF Doom, De La Soul and too many others to list. They fit right in, but their sound is different. It's hard hitting, organic future brand of music is posted up somewhere between rock and a hard place, strangely familiar, but brand new.

¡MAYDAY! is a two man band consisting of Plex Luthor (producer/keyboardist - with work under the belt for Algorithm, Ecko multi-media, Discovery Channel and various Adult Swim spots), and MC Bernbiz (Miami's hometown hero). In 2004 they released Quicksand which became a local classic and caught the attention of up and coming record label, SouthBeat Records, home to platinum producer Jim Jonsin (produced with Jamie Foxx, Pitbull, Trick Daddy). They were offered a recording deal soon after. In early 2006 they released their first commercial vinyl, Angles, distributed by Counterflow Distribution.
