La Guardia goes to Colombia
What’s going on my people? My name is La Guardia (stage name/real name simultaneously) your local hip hop best friend from the Miami hip hop scene.
I wanted to let you know that a hip hop organization called La Lengua A De Mi Barrio (a hip hop exchange program between the U.S. and Colombia) will be flying me to Colombia May 9th – May 25th. Travel sponsored by Partners of the Americas with support from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Office of Citizen Exchanges, U.S. Department of State to promote improved understanding of the culture and institutions of the peoples of the Americas. Though I can’t afford to fly all of ya’ll out there with me, I figured out a much cheaper way to do about the same thing…through the magic of blog! Right here on REVMiami.com!!!
Follow me through the cities of Cartagena and Barranquilla as I perform in hip hop festivals, participate in social justice/marketing/cultural workshops, collaborate with local hip hop artists, attempt to learn a new language and more. The purpose of this trip is to bring two communities together to share our love for hip hop, our struggles, and to create social, political, and artistic change.
Feel free to give me any advice if you've traveled to Colombia before or want to teach me helpful Spanish phrases online! I'll be posting pictures too.
peace/blessings.

Hey La Guardia!!! how cool. I'm from Colombia. Barranquilla Colombia actually. I live in Miami.
a few things to note while your there.
dont take any nice bling, watches or things that are too branded. its a target for thieves and then their knwo your a tourist. if your taking moiney out of an ATM and a taxi drops you off, tell him to go, take out your money and then get a new taxi. sometimes the taxi ppl see you get money and mug you when you get back in. Sometimes. dont walk aroud at night alone.
it's a little dangerous.
other than that its fun. do you have someone that can help you? someone that speaks english and spanish to trnslate.
spanish words you should know:
como estas? hwo are you
cerveza: beer
bano: bathroom
taxi; taxi
pesos: know the exchange rate for $.
Hey, aside from being Colombian, i contacted you because I work for Samuel Adams Beer. and i am the new Hispanic Marketing manager. im looking to infiltrate the latino community in florida. What do you do in Miami at a local level that includes Hispanic bilingual ppl?
maybe we can partner up on soemthing. i could bring product to an event of yours or something.
thoughts?
my name is Carol Gutierrez
Thanks for the tips Carol! I'll have an English speaking contact with me throughout my time in Colombia, so I'll be good. Fortunately I won't have to worry about taxis and I'm not a bling person, lol…even if I wanted to be I couldn’t afford too. Now when it comes to working in the Hispanic/bilingual community - I've performed in protest/demonstrations for C.I.W. and clubs throughout Miami (which definitely included the hispanic community, though not specific to it). I'm not really a drinker though, so I'm probably not much help for the promotion.
Thanks again for the help! Bless
