LGBT Pride Miami: April 18, 2009

denise-for-postsI had the pleasure of talking with Steve Adkins, the President of the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, the largest not-for-profit corporation in the County for gay and lesbian businesses. Adkins was happy to answer my questions. He started by mentioning his passion for the love and hope that the LGBT community shares.

After plenty of board meetings and a whole lot of work, Adkins said, the first Miami Pride parade finally came to fruition. The main goal of putting on this parade was to create awareness of the LGBT community and its main issues, and to increase visibility of the LGBT community in South Florida. Adkins also credited Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower, who he says took the initiative to assure that the event would come together. Bower's participation was fueled by the memory of her dear friend, Mr. A.C. Weinstein, who recently passed away. Mr. Weinstein was very much involved in the LGBT community.

The parade attracted a diverse crowd. One word came to mind when zooming in on all the vivacious, excited faces -- Unity. From floats replete with rainbow colored flags, to couples who have shared more than fifty years of their lives together, this parade was nothing short of beautiful. Considering it was the first pride parade to hit the Miami streets, it surely came full circle.

At the end, you could feel the excitement roaring through the crowds that such an event had finally taken place, and that they were able to enjoy the sense of unity that Miami's LGBT community had never felt. Enjoy some pictures. Spread the word, and especially the LOVE.
