Sinking the USNS Vandenberg
I think I got a little jealous of La Guardia's trip to Colombia and I had to take a trip of my own.
I was contacted by an organizer for an event in Key West called The Sinking of the USNS Vandenberg. Every so often an old warship will be sunk off a coast to be turned into a man-made reef. The USNS Vandenberg, a troop transport from World War II and the Hungarian Revolution, will get this honor next week off the coast of Key West.
The concept of sinking a battleship is one of those cool little quirks of mankind. Taking a machine of war and turning it into something positive, like a home for countless sea animals, is pretty fascinating.
I head down to Key West from Monday, May 18 until Wednesday, May 20. The three day bash starts at Island Dogs Bar at 505 Front Street, then heads to the "Whatever Floats Your Boat" Happy Hour Party from 7pm to 11pm at the Westin Resort, and my trip ends at the Green Parrot Bar at the corner of Southard and Whitehead Street.
Most importantly, all three days will feature The Ark Band, an Ohio based Reggae band that invited me down for the trip.
THE ARK BAND is a St. Lucian reggae band, based in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1987 by Terry and Eustace Bobb, (The St. Lucian Riddim Twins) THE ARK BAND has continually toured across the United States, Canada and Jamaica sharing its roots reggae, calypso, and soca music.
Combining heavenly harmonies with tight crisp performances, this powerhouse of talent captures their audiences with their very first note. THE ARK BAND's repertoire combines original and cover compositions with classic and current reggae hits designed to entertain, educate and enlighten all types of people. THE ARK BAND continues to be a dynamic force on the American scene after two decades, their songs expressing the love, peace, togetherness and spirituality needed in our world today!
The events continue after I leave, Thursday May 21st at Rick's Bar at 208 Duval Street where they'll be hosting a Martini Party. The week after, starting Tuesday, May 26th at 6 pm, there will be a cocktail party at the Guy Harvey’s Island Grill at 511 Greene Street followed by a party at Rick’s/Durty Harry’s at 9 pm located at 208 Duval Street. On Wednesday May 27th, at 7 pm, there will be rum specials and live entertainment at the Rum Barrel at 585 Front Street. The final celebration to wrap up the festivities will be a concert featuring Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band.
I will be keeping a running journal of the three days on REVMiami. Keep an eye out for daily updates.
