5 questions with Matt Jacquette from Bachaco

Bachaco, from left to right: Jose, Eddy, Domingo, Bruce, Nanu, Matt
Bachaco has been performing their infectious Cumbia spiked Reggae at some of Miami's hottest night clubs and bars for a couple of years. Being a fairly young band they have shown off their skills and built a solid reputation with fan support stretching as far North as Massachusetts and down South to Colombia. These fellas are enjoying life fully, it comes out in their music and attitude. Bachaco is made up of: Eddy- vocals, Jose- bass/vocals, Matt - guitar/vocals, Bruce- trumpet/vocals, Domingo- drums, and Nanu- guitar. I caught up with Matt on the phone and through email just after he and the boys returned from a one off gig in Colombia.
Steven: Regarding your recent experience in Colombia, can you tell me about the scene there and how your music was received?
Matt: The Rock and Pop scene is predominately more accepted than Cumbia in Columbia. Which is surprising since Cumbia is more native to the country. I was a little concerned about the reaction from the audience to our music since Bachaco is mostly centered around reggae music. But when that first bass-line hit and the guitar created a gust of melody, the crowd swayed in all directions like a tree in the wind. I guess reggae is a type of universal music!
S: It sounds like you guys have been picking up some good momentum, soon after coming back home you all are going on a tour up the East coast and over to Chicago. What gig are you looking forward to the most?

M: Not to long ago Bachaco went on a mini-tour to Georgia and North Carolina. It was amazing! Seeing new faces every moment, meeting different kinds of people, creating new experiences to remember for a lifetime; it's more than amazing! Our first gig on the tour was in Atlanta, Georgia at the Apache Cafe. The employees are the coolest bunch of people I've ever met, and that made us feel more than welcomed. The setting is nice and cozy, the type of cozy which you experience at home with your favorite show on TV and an infinite amount of your favorite food! The sound there is perfect! You can hear every detail, every note, every drum fill, every mezzopiano, every sound. I can go on and on but Apache Cafe is the place to be!
S: Who is the biggest influence in your musical career?
M: The band's main influences are latin rock superstars Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, latin reggae innovators Los Pericos, roots Cumbia from Colombia and Jamaica's dancehall.
S: What is Bachaco's message?
M: The little things matter the most. Everything that we have, we usually take it for granted since it's there. But when it's gone we seem to miss it, need it. Be grateful for the simple things, it's what makes us who we are.
S: I read somewhere that you have a new album coming soon, when can we get our hands on it?
M: As of now, the band is currently recording their first album. Should be finished within the next couple of months. It does not have a release date yet.
S: Alright, thanks Matt!
M: No Problem! It was fun answering these questions!
Bachaco will be performing at Jazzid's 13th year anniversary Friday June 12 with Locos por Juana.
