The Birth of King Kong Bass

kingkongbassTonight there is a new party at PS14 called King Kong Bass.  Basically the concept is bringing together a bunch of bass and Dubstep DJs and producers along with Hip-Hop promoters Showstomerz, and several of their artists, to create a regular bass and Dubstep party.

What I really want to focus on is Dubstep.  Dubstep is a new form of electronic/dance music that developed in Bristol, England, in the early 2000's.  It has a slower feel then other electronic music and is mainly bass driven.  From what I've read online, Dubstep grew out of the UK's Garage and Grime.  Over time it's developed overseas to be one of the largest and most popular genres of music.

The bass-heavy Dubstep has also gained attention from the Hip Hop community due to the bass heavy beats.  Recently, artists like Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Lil' Wayne, and Pharrell Williams have been using Dubstep beats in songs, and even Pitchfork Magazine has been running regular Dubstep articles on their website.

Yet, it seems like a natural fit that Dubstep has caught fire in Miami.  A traditional DJ driven music scene combined with a love of bass music has created a great market for Dubstep DJs and producers.

Recently, White Room hosted a Scion House Party featuring three of the biggest names in Dubstep: Kode9, The Spaceape, and Martyn.  Most notably was the addition of local Dubstep DJ and label owner of Basshead Records - Juan Basshead.

Basshead has been featured in Miami New Times (Head Spins: Juan Basshead) and recently released Otto von Schirach's Dubstep single Bass Low/Bass Galactica 8.  Additionally, he has been one of the featured artists at ((SHAKE))'s monthly Bass Low party and was the featured DJ in the Dubstep room at Miami Summerfest 2 featuring Jeru the Damaja (who collaborated with Otto von Schirach on a Dubstep track).

Other notable names in Miami Dubstepers are: George Young, Some Jerk, The Nome, and this Saturday is going to be the premiere event for Mr. Alvarez.

So far there have been fantastic response between the different parties and King Kong Bass is getting a lot of attention on Facebook.  I'll be there tonight to cover the story, so I'll have a follow up article for next week.
