The Graffiti of Miami-Art Basel 09
A long-standing holiday tradition of mine is driving through the well-decorated neighborhoods to admire the lighted residences. As a child I remember the excitement of piling into my parents old Buick with my brother and driving all over town to witness the Christmas spirit in lights. This season I have acquired a new favorite past time of driving through the back streets of the magic city to observe the gifts left behind by some of the best graffiti crews in our community like TCP and MSG Cartel. Driving along and discovering every colorful new piece, I felt a similar sense of excitement.
The majority of the street art featured here is related to Primary Flight which “is a collaborative curatorial organization dedicated to the production of site-specific, street level, mural installations. Since its inception in 2007, Primary Flight has brought together over 100 of the world’s most influential Street Artists to install their bodies of work live in the streets of Wynwood.”
Many buildings and walls were primed over to allow a fresh canvas for these talented artists to go crazy. Ric and I cruised around early on in the process when the work was just beginning; it was interesting to see the progression from outlined beginnings to the bold and animated endings.
I started out on NW 27th Street and 6th Avenue where I had the pleasure of meeting Retna and El Mac. They were getting busy on a massive portrait of a figure with his arms outstretched surrounded by a coded message. I then worked my way South, parallel with I-95 down to 23rd and beyond where I hit the jackpot. There is beautiful work wrapping around the entire block.
The spots are too many to mention, I don’t even know if I could describe where they are or who painted them all but please comment back with the information if you like. Thank you to all of the artists for keeping our streets beautifully animated!
