Miami New Times' Artopia 2010
As the ever oppressive heat of Miami begins to fade, I've been asking myself, "is there a better time than winter to be living in this city?" Starting with Art Basel in December, continuing through to March's Winter Music Conference, it seems like there is massive event after massive event.
This is the second year that Artopia has popped on my radar. Last year I couldn't make it out to the event, but all reports were that it was a massive venue with a lot of little rooms that contained art, food, and drink, with the only downside that Charcol Studios either had no air conditioner or it wasn't strong enough to cool off the massive crowd that came out - and last year, we didn't have the consistantly pleasant weather we've had this Winter.
This year, Miami New Times moved Artopia to the Freedom Tower, located right across the street from the American Airlines Arena and Bayside. It seems like more and more events are happening within the Freedom Tower, which is part of Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus; a good thing considering that it's not located right in the middle of the ghetto (and while embracing Miami's ghettoness is a big part of being a Miamian, I don't think everyone shares that sentiment).
Walking in, the main thing that stood out were all the live models everywhere, which were part of Luis Valenzuela's fashion display. The designs were basic and simple, but I don't think anyone was expecting a couture. Also, it was great to see a group of artists representing the Bakehouse Art Complex.
And if that wasn't enough, the night's music was topped off by the always amazing local electro-bass acts BFGF, Afrobeta, and the King of Miami bass Otto von Schirach.
The only downside of the event was that the Freedom Tower was relatively small. I can't say I was overwhelmed by the size of the event, but I can say that the turnout was incredible. This may be a huge "duh" moment, but man, art is popular in Miami. Plus, organizing artists is extremely difficult in and of itself.
