#1: Rachel Goodrich's "Lightbulb", Directed by Lucas Leyva - Winner of (?) Sweat Records Music Video Contest

* Editor's note: I noticed a lot of traffic coming in from Sweat Record's website regarding this post.  I originally posted this video as the Winner of Sweat Record's Rachel Goodrich video because of the quote on the YouTube posting, "Winner of the Sweat Records Music Video Contest."  Apparently the Winner of the contest has not been official announced yet.  Stay tuned to Sweat Record's website for the official announcement.

Irony (ahy-ruh-nee) - "an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected."

Over the past month or so, Sweat Records was running a contest for local filmmakers to create a video for Rachel Goodrich's innocently pleasant "Lightbulb", which I'm hearing almost monthly, including Shotime's Weeds Season 5.

And of course, the winner would have to be one of the founding members of the Borscht Film Festival, Lucas Leyva.  I've said this over and over again, but Borscht contains the best of local Miami filmmakers.  Period.

Taking the soft feel of the song, flipping it completely on it's head, and basically taking a dump on any preconceived notions for what a Rachel Goodrich video should be is nothing short of brilliant.  Plus, in typical Borscht fashion, the video plays on one of the odd phenomenon's of underground art cultures rising up next to one of a city's worst neighborhoods - i.e., Wynwood's proximity to Overtown and Liberty City.

#2: ¡MAYDAY! - Technology

If Miami is a primordial soup of bands fighting and struggling to "make it", then keeping tabs on bands winning that race is one of my favorite pastimes.  For awhile there it looked like Honor Roll's Awesome New Republic was on a straight shot to the top, but after all of MAYDAY!'s work with Little Wayne, it is apparently giving them a good boost for national exposure.

The reason why I'm posting MAYDAY!'s video for Technology is that it will soon be getting regular rotation on MTV.  Their page can be seen here: http://www.mtv.com/videos/mayday/477325/technology.jhtml

While this isn't a guarentee for anything, it's still a great sign to be witnessing MAYDAY!'s possible rise.  Let's see how it goes.

#3: LaGuardia - Economy Count

Take a pretty epic riff, Sesame Street's Count to 12, turn it into a beat, get a great hip-hop song.

#4: Miami New Times Artopia 2010

I had been trying all last week to get my Artopia 2010 post up, but the 1 Year Anniversary Party was taking up a ton of time.  Anyway, New Times posted a review video of the event that featured Miami electro-bass favorites BFGF, Afrobeta, and Otto von Schirach.  Hopefully I'll get the coverage up sometime this week, but in the meantime enjoy this video.

  1. Lucas Leyva

Thanks for the shoutout on the video, but there were actually three winners!

The other two were this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jgx-ivCX1aQ&feature=related

And this one, by local filmmaker Fro Rojas, who even though has not shown anything in Borscht yet, he has been a huge help on many projects and will hopefully be involved more in the future. Enjoy!
