Zirarock: Rega-Mix #1

When I first started doing projects in the Miami music scene, there was one band whose album I listened to obsessively, and is still have in a lot of my playlists: Bling Bling.  They had just come out with their album Diary Of A..., and in 2003 were named New Times Indie Band of the Year.

My main contact in Bling Bling was Spy-Fi Records head, Ed Artigas.

Shortly after Bling Bling broke up, Ed formed Map of the Universe with a couple of his old bandmates, who were able to release an EP or two, but eventually broke up.

There's been a couple of other musical projects here and there, but lately Ed's been taking it a bit easy.  Can you blame him?  If there's anything I share in common with him, it's the drive to make a difference in the music scene and get involved with as many different projects as possible.  Besides Bling Bling and Map of the Universe, he's also been part of other bands Spark Chamber and Marisleysis Alien Conspiracy, as well as running the previously mentioned Spy-Fi Records.

Also in 2004-5, Ed was the sound engineer at a couple of my shows and concerts.  I've always tried keeping Ed involved in whatever projects I've done, just as he's always kept me in the loop for his.  He also taught me how to play drums, and we had a couple of failed starts at forming a band ourselves.

Not too long ago I got an email from Ed titled, in typical Ed fashion, "how am I supposed to write for you if I don't have an assignment?"  Well, rather than have him write something for REV, I would rather focus on his most recent project, Zirarock.

Zirarock is Ed's DJ name for spinning Dub and Reggae.  And it's good.  It's so good, actually, that I invited him to be a special guest DJ at REVMiami's 1 Year Anniversary Celebration.   He also agreed to periodically make Dub and Reggae mixes to post on REVMiami.

You'll hear some Reggae favorites on this album, like Pass The Dutchie and some Bob Marley.  Enjoy some chilled out music for your Tuesday morning.
