Odd Duck Indie Craft Bazaar

I would like to introduce our newest photographer and writer, Kelly Coulson.  This is the first of many pieces to come.  Welcome to the REVMiami contributor staff Kelly.

I have a very distinct memory of sitting with my mother and making my very first pair of PJ’s. I had chosen a hot pink Elmo fleece fabric, a fairly standard run of the mill pattern, and was breaking in my brand new sewing machine that I received for Christmas. Did I mention I was a freshman in college at the time?! Many years later they are still the most unflattering piece of clothing that I own but I love them and would never part with them.

This past Saturday I attended the first (of hopefully many) Odd Duck indie bazaar and craft fair and the vendors there showed me (and everyone else) how craft is really done. What can I say, I had a blast! The two roomed event was wall to wall creativity at its finest and I could have spent the entire weekend there just wandering around in marvel. I, nor any of the attendees as far as I could tell, had an issue forking over the $5 entry fee, especially when you consider that it got you a raffle ticket, access to the a few fun DIY tables, and some pretty sweet face painting.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwich necklaces, reproductive organ based plush and retro inspired handmade hats were just some of the interesting and exciting creations on sale at the all day event. Needless to say, I was in love with a good ½ of the items and ready to marry the other ½. It took every ounce of self control to walk away only purchasing a few select items I couldn’t live without and that’s mostly because I couldn’t fit everything into style=the back of my hatchback. (In case you’re wondering, 1. a felted mustache from Busy Vee Creative Persuits, 2. a handmade baby’s bib with a embroidered felted bunny by Mindy and Lola, and 3. a Jacob Black duct tape wallet by craftysarah)

Even though the Odd Duck is over, I highly recommend you keep tabs on the OD’s creators “Hollywood Craft Mafia” for great events to come in the future. I also suggest you head over to the OD site and check out some of the vendors from the show; regardless of the day, someone’s birthday is always just around the corner.

Side note – I’d also like to apologize to the roller derby girl that I kept accidentally hitting with my camera bag. I’d like to say that it was my feeble attempt at showing my untapped derby skills but truth me told, I’m just that clumsy.
