Big City Breakdown 15: Ex Norwegian -"Upper Hand"
Big City Breakdown (BCB) is video feature where local musicians are taken out of their typical performance element and placed at one of Miami's signature outdoor locations as they present a song. The presentation will be shot in a single running take with no editing magic. BCB is an opportunity to showcase Miami's best talent, highlighting their versatility without electricity, four walls, and other amenities of the bar and club scene.
When originally coordinating with Ex-Norwegian, we planned to meet at Miami’s most accessible castle. While scouting this place out, it appeared to be the ideal location. So, on a chilly afternoon Roger, Nina, and Arturo stormed the castle with an arsenal of percussive equipment, a melodica, and two guitars. Upon performing some tests, we quickly learned that the street noise and other distracting factors dictated that we move to our plan B.
Plan B was an interesting downtown structure adjacent to a cemetery. While we unloaded our equipment in the parking lot, we got a sense that this may not work either. To my surprise the trio agreed to test out the cemetery and it turned out to be where we developed this fifteenth episode.
Ex-Norwegian gave us a sneak peak of their unreleased sophomore album Sketch by performing "Upper Hand". The song has a catchy hook and positive message to continue fighting against all odds. We were impressed by the tightness and professionalism of the band. I still find myself singing the song in my head to this day. I believe the resting souls enjoyed the performance that afternoon as much as we did. How often do the departed have the benefit of witnessing such a delightful treat on their turf?
Sketch is scheduled to be released this summer, so keep tabs on Ex Norwegian’s website for details as they unfold.
