Radioboxer at Titanic Brewery: "I'll Never Let Go, Jack"

You know that old saying, “it’s better late than never”? I’m going to pull that one outta my bag of tricks as I finally cover the “I’ll Never Let Go, Jack” show that seems like an eternity ago. Despite the length of time, I can still say, with certainty, that the Radioboxer show was one I will not soon forget (and I haven’t).

The “I’ll Never Let Go, Jack” show was slated to start at 10:00 (that’s PM folks).  I may be 27 and look like I’m 16 (and get IDed for R-rated movies), but I act like I’m 80. I’m more Bea Aurther than Britney Spears; I don’t smoke, I don’t often drink, and I try to be in bed by 10:30ish. Needless to say, I was a bit concerned about attending such a "late show." 3 hours later I walked out of the Titanic Brewery buzzed, bruised and grinning from ear to ear – and I have Radioboxer to thank for it!

Having never heard or seen Radioboxer before I was told to “keep the camera on her!” when I was introduced to face painted lead singer Vanne. As the show began, I climbed up on my chair, and was greeted with bright lights and a keyboard playing chicken. I turned to my partner in crime and proclaimed with confidence that this was going to be a great show. And he knows my proclamations are never wrong!

While some folks aren't into a theatrical show, to me, a bull horn, ticker tape, LED lights, or a random red liquid, are the elements that make a show memorable and add a layer of amusement to a band's live performance. It’s been over a month since the show and I’m still ranting and raving about it.

That said, it wasn't the theatrics that made the Radioboxer show such an amazingly experience – it was the music! Every song was full of energy and coerced your body into all kinds of movements. They made you stand up on your chair (which as previously mentioned I was already doing), shake whatever ass your momma gave you, and chant along with whatever words were being blasted your way. Each member spilled every ounce of energy on that stage, along with the anonymous red liquid and as a result made countless fans that night (myself included).

Even though my initial reason for attending the show was to photograph the event, I couldn’t help but drop my camera and simply enjoy the set. I can’t say I resembled much of Bea Arthur as I stood on that chair singing “I gotta go home now” with a beer in my hand. These late night show will take some adjusting to my internal clock but with music like this, it’s a time change that I’m more than happy to make.
