Photo Journal : Art Basel Day 1 - SIN at the BAC November 29
The Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC) kicked off the Art Basel festivities with their Juried exhibition titled SIN in the Audrey Love Gallery. Each of the seven sins was assigned to a different prestigious Miami based judge. The sin specific artwork was selected across every medium and from across the country. A sculpture titled “You know You Want It”, by resident BAC artist Donna Lee Steffans, featured a glass box containing a hundred dollar bill surrounded by several sharp glass wedges. The Swenson Gallery contained a 5X7 theme exhibit where all pieces were sold for $100. If I’m not mistaken all of the artwork here was be resident artists.
Walking through the hallways leading to the individual artist studios is always great because they typically display new work. I popped in on some old friends like Steve Burzynski, to find a charcoal rubbing he produce from a trip to Barcelona this summer and some new furniture: a gorgeous black walnut coffee table & a custom daybed. Gerry Stecca’s work has been evolving as well, he’s constructing people with cloths pins & incorporating other objects into his work like tree limbs. Mike Rivamonte has been building rocket ships & spacecrafts, inspired from a trip to his hometown in Alabama. Six year resident Alicia H. Torres has been incorporating rust as a new element into her paintings, for an interesting finishing touch (literally, she encourages touching the painting).
Stokeswood from Atlanta played a tight set outside near the colorful silos. These boys play an upbeat electro-pop slathered with sweet harmonies, encouraging their audience to dance. The five members multitask through the set incorporating: guitar, keyboards, drums, loops, harmonica, and beat machines. In describing their sound I feel a mix of Coldplay and Minus the Bear is appropriate. Keep an eye out for them, as they will be playing a couple of more Basel events like Wynwood Walls at the new Wynwood Kitchen and Bar on Sat, Dec. 4 (more info on the website below).
Overall the BAC experience met my expectations, they always deliver a killer event: stand out artwork, good people, access to artists and their studios, and great live music. There are other events slated for the week like: "On December 2nd at 9am, the BAC will open its doors early to patrons for the official Art Basel Miami Beach- Wynwood Studio Tour”. Also the SIN exhibit will be open through January 25th.
