Photo Journal : December 2- Art Basel Day 3
On December 2, I headed straight from work to about 21th Street and N. Miami Ave. where I parked my car and took off on my skateboard. I cruised around and ran into some cool graffiti and then I found the Art of Basketball exhibit. This gallery contained over 100 different official NBA backboards and balls redecorated by some of the best graffiti and street artists. There I met Billi Kid, curator who produced this huge mosaic of Shaq made with tupperware tops. I got back on my board and found the Sanrio exhibit, where I was greeted by four beautifully costumed ladies. Next stop, a mural by Italian artists: Pixel Poncho and Gallo from the Army of Snipers crew.
I jumped in the car and drove north a little ways where I parked and got back on my board. I was lucky to encounter members of Shepard Fairey's crew: Nick Bowers, Spencer Eldon, and Furlong working on a huge mural on N. Miami Ave and 41st Street. I made it to the OHWOW gallery early, prior to the public opening and got a sneak peek. The Ricart Gallery had a double header featuring a photographic exhibit by Tizano Magni titled Coming and a multi-media collection by Carlito Dalceggio titled Joy-Misery-Compassion.
Time was ticking and I had to eat something prior to making it to Grand Central where I was scheduled to meet Phantogram for an interview. When I arrived, I bumped into Twin Shadow in the parking lot. They just completed their sound check and were heading out to catch a glimpse of Basel before the show. I entered the club and witnessed Phantogram's sound check then talked to them for a good half hour. (Stay tuned for my interview with Sarah and Josh, which I will post it up next week after we wrap the Basel coverage.) I have been following the band's progress for a little over a year now, including live studio performances on MPR and Daytrotter, but the live experience surpassed all my expectations. Despite Phantogram's intense tour regime, the band held nothing back for their adoring Miami fans.
