Captain's Blog: Broken Social Scene - February 12 - Revolution Live
Broken Social Scene performed at Revolution Live last Saturday February 12 to a nearly sold out crowd. I arrived to the venue late (after 11pm), having attended an engagement for a visiting friend, so I missed the opening act as well as the first half of Broken Social Scene’s set. I attempted to walk in with my camera and was immediately turned away by the door man, apparently photos are only allowed during a tiny window that was slammed shut on my late ass. I put my gear away, entered the club and b-lined my way as close to the front of the stage as possible. Armed with just a cell phone, I settled with the built-in camera as my weapon.
I was in awe by the quality of the live presentation: the guitars, horns and the band’s energy in general exploded on the stage. Kevin Drew was feeling the love in the room and admitted that Ft. Lauderdale killed the crowd’s vibe from the previous night in Tampa, whom they “put to sleep”. I was stoked that Broken Social Scene appreciated the audience by playing such a passionate set, varying a mix of new tunes as well as a couple of hits from the vault. At one point they broke into Beastie Boys’ Funky Boss, which was completely unexpected. Drew commented on the audience shouting out song suggestions, “If we didn’t play something you wanted to hear tonight go home, turn on a strobe light, and play those songs”. To all those readers who couldn’t make it to the show I pass Mr. Drew's advice down to you.
