5 Questions with Doug Benson
The South Beach Comedy Festival begins tomorrow and the first major act to grace our shores is Doug Benson. Benson is scheduled to perform two sets at the Colony Theatre on Wednesday March 2. A prolific entertainer whose involvement in the business dates back to the 80’s, you may recognize him from: Super High Me, Last Comic Standing, or his latest television venture: The Benson Interruption. In addition to his work on TV and the big screen he is the host of a live podcast called Doug Loves Movies and has released three comedic albums. I caught up with the busy Humoredian via email and this is what we discussed:
Steven: What are your thoughts on this year's Oscars event, the hype and the big winners?
Doug: I was disappointed that Academy Award hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway didn't do a bit where his arm got caught between her breasts. I thought they did a good job, for a pair of people who had no business hosting the Oscars. And the awards mostly went to the right films and performances. I liked The Social Network better than King's Speech, but that's probably because I like Facebook more than World War II.
S: What was your most memorable guest interruption on The Benson Interruption thus far?
D: It's usually just me on stage doing the interrupting, but one time I co-interrupted for an entire show with Zach Galifianakis. We made a pretty good team. Like Gnomeo and Juliet.
S: After participating in California's medical marijuana program for a couple of years, do you find it strange that many states like Florida are so behind in the progress in achieving the same liberty?
D: Yeah, Florida should've been the second state to adopt medical marijuana after California. It's crazy to me the New Jersey has medical marijuana and Florida doesn't. If Snooki can get a medical card, Mickey Mouse should be able to get one too.
S: April 20th is coming up soon. Where will you be recording your next cd and do you have a theme or name picked out?
D: No name yet, but I'm recording my fourth comedy album at the Punch Line in Sacramento. I'm making a new one every year on 4/20 until I die or until people tell me to stop.
S: Aside from performing at the South Beach Comedy Festival, what are you looking forward to about being in Miami?
D: Being warm. It's been a very cold winter this year, even in California. I will also be eating most of your sushi.
